PIECES

By Sharyn Anne Durley

Director: Paul Barrs
Synposis: Sometimes memories are like a jigsaw. You need to fit all the pieces together for them to make sense.
In her small room in and assisted care facility Nan is trying to finish a jigsaw puzzle but it’s not going well despite help from her young visitor Tim. Of course the drinking, smoking and pill popping doesn’t help, but it’s the bitter memories of how war has wrecked her life that is the real distraction. Nan knows she can’t rest until the jigsaw is finished.

ONCE BITTEN

Synopsis: If you had to choose between family and duty in a life and death situation – which would you choose ?
An experienced S.E.S. helicopter pilot faces a moral dilemma. After he is told his sons may stranded along the flooded Brisbane river he has to decide whether to look for them first, or return to the Lockyer Valley and evacuate dozens of people still desperate for help.

From July 13

Directed by Kennedy Fox

Written by Royce Ryton

The play focuses on the crisis that faced the nation when Edward VIII declared his deep love for Wallis Simpson. Unswayed by the prospect of public scandal, family upheaval and even abdication, he is insistent that he will marry the women he loves. The play is set in 1936, in Queen Mary's private sitting room at Marlborough House. This insight into the domestic life of the Royal Family shows the volatile relationship between Queen Mary and her son caused by his love affair, and mirrors the other great royal constitutional crisis portrayed in the film The Queen

Characters

Queen Mary

The Duchess of Gloucester (“Alice”) Thirty-four years old. Very shy. Female, aged 25 to 40. Princess Mary, The Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood. In her late thirties. Supports her mother dutifully in all things. Female, aged 25 to 45.
The Duchess of York (“Elizabeth”) Thirty-six years old. Formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She is now quite used to being royalty and normally quite extraordinarily charming. This role is played by Helena Bonham-Carter in The King’s Speech. Female, aged 25 to 45.

The Hon. Margaret Wyndham Lady-in-waiting. Forty-seven to fifty-six years old. She is devoted to the Queen but not on the same intimate term as Lady Airlie. Female, aged 35 to 60.

Lady Mabel Airlie: A life-long friend and lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary. She is elderly, dignified and sensible. Female, aged 40 to 80.

The Duke of York (“Bertie”) Forty years old. Shy and retiring with a stammer which becomes pronounced during moments of stress. He is, however, also very tough when he has to be – his shy, quiet manner is deceptive. The role played by Colin Firth in The King’s Speech. Male, aged 25 to 45.

King Edward VIII (“David”) In the play he is forty-two to fifty-one years old but should look twenty-five to thirty at the most. He has devastatingly charming. The role is played by Guy Pearce in The King’ Speech. Male, aged 20 to 55.

Walter Monckton K.C. Forty years old. A charming and very able legal adviser. Male, aged 25 to 55.

John, the Queens’ Page. Could be any age but probably in his twenties. A very small role, though has a nice if short dialogue with David. Male, aged 20 to 80.
