SCADA and The Sunshine
Coast Theatre Alliance gave Sunshine Coast singers the opportunity to work at
the
SCADA Studios in Nambour, with sought-after Los Angeles’ musical
director, casting director, singer/songwriter,
producer/arranger and mostly
piano player, Todd
Schroeder, during his third visit to Australia.
The Master Class, “How to Audition for Today’s Musical Theatre”, took 20 local vocalists through everything from presenting an appropriate performance CV to editing a performance piece into a 16-measure audition excerpt. From the perspective of a casting director, he walked performers through the finer points of presenting oneself for a casting panel, including advice on the “do’s and don’ts” of auditions. Each vocalist had their opportunity to perform in front of the group, receive feedback from their audience and from Todd, and revisit their audition piece whilst putting audition etiquette into practice. For many, the most valuable part of this process was the emphasis on the storytelling aspect of singing, learning to first of all “serve the lyric”.
SCADA graduate, Lucy Doherty, landed her first professional role in The Little Mermaid for Tokyo Disney after taking Todd’s first Sunshine Coast workshop in 2007. She said of this year’s Master Class, “Todd’s humour, his light hearted and supportive approach to his classes and his passion for helping young performers make his workshops truly rewarding and inspiring experiences; a must for all aspiring performing artists.”
Sunshine Coast performing artists can look forward to welcoming Todd Schroeder again in 2010.
