History of Lind Lane Theatre
Originally known as Nambour Amateur Theatrical Society, the group was
established late in 1945,
with their first production taking place in
1946, which means that next year the group celebrates 60 years of
theatre.
It was reported in the Nambour Chronicle of 1946 that "Over 800 persons
attended the initial production
by the Nambour Amateur Theatrical
Society in the Diggers Hall last Wednesday and Thursday evening
and
expressed appreciation of the excellence of local talent in song,
dance, comedy sketches and orchestral sections". |
Upon becoming
incorporated in 1986, the group changed its name to Nambour Lind Lane
Theatre Incorporated.
Starting out in 1945 in the Diggers Hall in Nambour, productions
continued to be staged at the Diggers Hall until 1958, when a move was
made to the new Diggers Hall Theatre. This was home for 3 years, until
1963, when productions were staged in the Nambour Civic Hall. It was
not until 1963 that the group acquired its own premises, The Little
Theatre in Blackall Terrace. However in 1972, disaster struck when the
theatre was destroyed by fire.
It took many more years of hard-work, blood, sweat and tears for the
group to be able to build it's own theatre in Lind Lane which was
finally completed in 1980. During those years period productions were
staged at the School of Arts building in Yandina whilst the funds were
raised for the new premises.
In 1988 a foyer area and fly-tower were added (almost unheard of in
amateur theatre),
making it one of the best and most intimate theatre
facilities on the coast.
In 2003, rumours spread through Nambour that the building was being
pulled down to make way for a shopping centre.
The rumours turned out
to be true, and Lind Lane Theatre was approached by Maroochy Shire
Council with relocation plans.
Developers wishing to extend the Nambour
Plaza , wanted to acquire the land occupied by Lind Lane Theatre from
the council.
As Lind Lane Theatre owned the building, the developers
were obliged to replace the building.
After a period of 18 months in the dark, the new Lind Lane Theatre,
located in Mitchell Street Nambour, was completed in June 2004 and
officially opened by renowned Australian playwright David Williamson.
The first production at the new facility, the musical spectacular La Cage Aux Folles opened in July 2004.
